Did you know you can make your own laundry detergent? Most people know, but have no desire to take the time. That is because there are a lot of unknown variables: what products you use, ratios, and how you use it. Not only that, but you have to invest time in making laundry detergent when you can just grab it in the aisle at the grocery store. There are actually benefits to making your own detergent though, especially when you have little ones at home.

Ingredients in Homemade Laundry Detergent

There are an unlimited number of recipes out there for laundry detergent. Each one uses a variation of ingredients and the amount placed in. Most homemade laundry detergents include some of these

  • Hot Water
  • Borax
  • Essential Oil
  • Washing Soda
  • Salt
  • Castile Soap
  • Grated Bar Soap

The main ingredient that determines the others is Borax. If you decide to use Borax, it cuts out the need for many of the other items. Borax, though, is being debated as to whether it should be used. It is added to most recipes because it boosts cleaning power and helps to remove odors. The controversy surrounds its safety. Some studies show that it is harmful to our reproductive systems. It is also shown to be a skin irritant. This is the biggest known issue and unfortunately if you are using it for sensitive baby skin, may be an issue.

Benefits of Homemade Laundry Detergent

Likely you are making your own laundry detergent for one of two reasons: finances or chemicals. You either want to save money as the cost of laundry detergents rise or you don’t want unnecessary chemicals all over your clothes. It is questionable if these are worth the work of making yours.

  • Saving Money: It was once found that making your own detergent saved a mere $26 and some change. While it does not sound like a lot, it also depends if you are buying name brand or generic. You will save more switching from a name brand detergent. Some families can do a lot with that small amount of extra money.
  • Chemicals: There are a number of additives found in laundry detergent. These may serve a use, but also come with a side effect. Surfactants, for example, are used as a booster to help the cleaner get into the fabric. It is known that these are carcinogenic, or cancer causing. Other chemicals included in over the counter detergent may be: chlorine, perfumes, phosphates, and dyes. Each of these is known to cause harm. It is not only in cleaning, but then imagine these chemicals sitting against your skin and then absorbed all day long. This can be dangerous for adults as well as babies.

Other benefits include

  • Environmental: Ingredients used in homemade laundry detergent are generally green and therefore good for the government.
  • Natural: These are natural ingredients that you can pronounce. You will know where they came from and how they affect the body. These naturally clean your clothes, remove odors, and whiten.
  • Efficiency: Homemade laundry detergent is actually extremely efficient and works in any type of washing machine. You can have an HE machine, top loader, front loader, or anything else and these work.
  • Safe for sensitive skin: Nobody has more sensitive skin than a baby. By choosing the ingredients going into your detergent, you won’t have to worry about how it is going to affect your child. She will also grow up without absorbing the chemicals found in over the counter detergent as well.

If you ever thought about making your own laundry detergent, try it at least twice. The first time you may find the recipe doesn’t clean as well as you like. The second time, you will see your results. It only takes approximately eight dollars to gather all the ingredients needed for a year of laundry detergent. That is worth the attempt. If it doesn’t work out, you can always run to the grocery store.
